SMS Launches Dynamic Hull Monitoring System for Marine Markets
10 Mar 2026
Sand Monitoring Ltd. (SMS) has launched its latest innovation: the Dynamic Hull Monitoring System, expanding its core asset integrity services from oil and gas into the broader marine asset integrity sector.
This advanced system extends floating asset lifespans through advanced real-time, predictive hull monitoring and provides a platform for Dynamic Risk-Based Inspection (DRBI), enabling efficient, sustainable performance for offshore, shipping, and naval fleets worldwide.
The solution supports FPSO operators and vessel owners, as well as a wide range of maritime stakeholders including oil and gas companies, shipping and fleet managers, naval and defence organisations, shipbuilders and design firms, port authorities and terminal operators, maritime insurers, regulatory bodies, and research institutions.
Unlike traditional vessel monitoring, which relies on static inspection intervals and “as-built” assumptions, this system provides a real-time holistic understanding of the vessel’s structural state. By capturing moment-to-moment conditions, advanced modelling techniques for fatigue and wear can be executed with enhanced accuracy, eliminating the redundant conservatism inherent in traditional analysis.
This shift from fixed schedules to condition-based intelligence enables smarter, cleaner operations. Maintenance is planned only when necessary, focusing inspections on areas requiring attention while extending intervals for those in good condition. This targeted approach avoids unnecessary dockings, reduces extra vessel trips, and minimises fuel waste, resulting in significant cost savings and lower emissions.
Furthermore, by supporting vessel life extension, the system transforms everyday asset management into a strategic tool for achieving net-zero goals and enhancing long-term operational resilience. It ensures vessels run more efficiently and safely, directly supporting the industry’s move toward greener, more robust operations.
